*When people think of Mississippi, they often picture magnolias, music, and mouthwatering catfish. But below the surface—sometimes literally—are unexpected facts, cultural milestones, and natural wonders. From an extinct volcano beneath Jackson to the depth of history in Natchez, Mississippi is full of surprises waiting to be uncovered.*
**Jackson’s Hidden Giant**
Did you know there’s a volcano underneath Jackson?
[Jackson Volcano](https://vicksburgnews.com/the-jackson-volcano-the-oldest-known-volcanic-structure-in-the-united-states/), extinct for over 70 million years, lies nearly 3,000 feet below the surface. It shaped the local terrain into what is now called the Jackson Dome, detectable even in gravity measurements. Today, it quietly sits beneath landmarks like the Mississippi Coliseum—an ancient reminder beneath the modern capital.
**The Mighty Mississippi River: Nature’s Superhighway**
The river that defines the region is more than just a waterway. It’s a life source, a historical path, and a natural wonder in its own right.
- Wildlife Galore: The Mississippi River supports a stunning array of creatures—alligators, crawfish, shrimp, turtles, herons, spoonbills, and more. Boasting 260 species of fish: that’s about 25% of all North America’s freshwater fish.
- [First Bridge](https://www.minnpost.com/mnopedia/2014/05/father-louis-hennepin-bridge-was-first-span-mississippi/#:~:text=by%20Matt%20Reicher%2C%20MinnPost,the%20river%20slow%20and%20unsafe.) (1855): The first bridge to cross the river was constructed over 165 years ago.
- Global Drainage Power: The Mississippi River has the fourth-largest drainage basin in the world, covering over 1.2 million square miles.
- Ten States of Flow: The river runs through Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
- [Great River Road](https://experiencemississippiriver.com/the-great-river-road-the-best-drive-in-america/#:~:text=The%20Great%20River%20Road%20National,historical%2C%20recreational%20and%20scenic%20properties.): This scenic route spans 110 counties and parishes, offering a historic drive alongside one of the world’s busiest inland waterways.
- 90-Day Drop: A drop of water takes roughly three months to travel from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico.
- Deepest Point: Algiers Point in New Orleans dips nearly 200 feet deep, the river’s deepest spot.
**Natchez, Mississippi: Where History Meets the River**
One of Mississippi’s oldest cities, Natchez was founded in 1716—older than the state itself. Sitting high above the river on scenic bluffs, Natchez became a wealthy hub in the steamboat era and today offers visitors a window into the past.
- Historic Tragedy: On May 6, 1840, Natchez suffered the [second deadliest tornado in U.S. history](https://www.natchez.ms.us/Archive/ViewFile/Item/128). With 317 lives lost, most aboard riverboats or on the docks, the event shaped the city’s story.
- Preserved Architecture: Natchez has 1,000+ buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, many of them stunning antebellum homes, with [Linden](https://www.ocregister.com/2025/05/07/travel-step-back-into-southern-history-in-natchez-miss/) being our personal favorite!
- Arts & Festivals: From the Natchez Festival of Music to blues nights and historic pageants, the city pulses with culture.

(an excerpt) “Design consultant on the project is Marjorie Feltus Hawkins of the Nashville design firm Feltus Hawkins Designs. Hawkins is a Natchez native and owns Linden. “We wanted her to do this because we wanted the convention center to have a Natchez look,” he said. “Phase 2 will bring a new look to the hallways, bathrooms and the entrance lobby. It will make you feel like you are walking into a historic property. It will have fine millwork and beautiful, cased arches down the hall. You should see the light fixtures. The doors will be trimmed to where they have a paneled look. It will give a feel like going to the Greenbrier.”

### [Natchez Spring Pilgrimage: How did it come to be?](https://www.lindenbandb.com/blog/2024/03/natchez-spring-pilgrimage-how-did-it-come-to-be)
**Published:** March 15, 2024

The annual spring historic home tour that takes place in Natchez, Mississippi is the longest running tour of its kind in America. Over ninety years after its inception, the Spring Pilgrimage still draws visitors with its impressive collection of historic mansions, manicured gardens, preservation and survival stories, natural beauty, and a local population born and bred into the art of making you feel welcome.
Natchez, Mississippi was one of the loveliest towns on the Mississippi River back in the mid-1800s, and it still looks much the same. It is said that before the Civil War, half of America’s millionaires called Natchez home and because of that it is now home to the most extensive, intact group of 19th century estates anywhere in the country. And while the houses are unbelievably beautiful, the stories are even better.
To answer what makes Natchez so unique with regards to this breathtaking collection of homes requires a brief history lesson. Natchez was spared complete destruction during the Civil War that many southern towns faced because many of the Natchez elite were either neutral or Union sympathizers; Natchez representatives to the state secession convention voted against secession; and Natchez held no strategic significance geographically with respect to the war. In 1863 the town surrendered, but Union troops occupied the area until well after the war ended.
Fast forward to 1927, when many of these historic home’s owners still occupied these extraordinary mansions and began to ponder an alliance with preservation in mind. It was this idea that birthed The Natchez Garden Club. In March 1931, a this small, but mighty organization planned to host a convention of like-minded organizations around the south.
On the agenda for convention visitors was a tour of the many beautiful gardens of the historic homes, which would be at their peak in the spring at the time of the convention. But a late freeze that year took care to ruin the gardens, and rather than disappointing the many visitors slated to come, it was suggested to allow these visitors to Natchez to tour the homes instead. This idea was not well-received by many homeowners, as it was a last-minute change, and required them to open their private residence to the public. But hospitality prevailed and thus the first widespread Natchez home tour occurred. The widespread opinion was these homes should not be kept a secret, and the idea for the first spring pilgrimage blossomed.
The Garden Club got to planning a week-long tour event the following year, creating pamphlets, folders, and posters. But 1932 found the country in the depths of the depression, and many members thought it impossible to be able to attract many people to Natchez during such troubling time. Despite some opposition plans moved forward and twenty-five homes opened their doors to the public.
An all-out effort by the historic homeowners was undertaken to showcase not just Natchez homes, but Natchez hospitality. And at week’s end, 1,500 visitors from thirty-seven states had come for the first official Natchez Spring Pilgrimage.
Natchez is still in the business of hosting the Spring Pilgrimage and has since added to that a Fall Pilgrimage. The proceeds from the Pilgrimages benefit the long-standing tradition of historic preservation in Natchez, where there are thirteen National Historic Landmarks and over 1200 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.

Linden Historic Bed and Breakfast landed on the pages of Southern Living Magazine for the second consecutive year in 2023. This latest edition features Linden in the highly esteemed ‘Southern Living Special Collector’s Edition: Porch Style’.
In the June 2022 edition of ‘Southern Living Magazine’ initially brought the spotlight to Linden’s long family history and majestic, 98-foot front gallery. The May 2023 issue of ‘Southern Living Special Collector’s Edition: Porch Style’ mentioned the six generations of Conner/Feltus homeowners, but heralded Linden as one of five historic homes in Mississippi with the “prettiest views.”
The dedication to preserving the rich history and charm of Linden has not gone unnoticed. This prestigious feature in Southern Living Magazine is a testament to the timeless beauty and unique character that Linden Historic Bed and Breakfast brings to Natchez.
We extend our gratitude to the community and our guests for their continued support. Linden’s inclusion in this special collector’s edition is not just a recognition of a building; it’s a celebration of the stories, memories, and warmth that echo through its halls and porches.
Any trip to Natchez should include the short trip to the edge of town where you will find Linden sitting nestled on seven peaceful acres, beckoning visitors to explore. The 3500 square feet of covered porches invite one to sit-a-spell and take in the picturesque views and discover why it stands out among Mississippi’s historic gems. House tours are available year-round, call for scheduling. If an entertaining and informative tour isn’t enough, guests are welcome to stay in one of the six recently renovated guestrooms. Each guestroom has its own private bathroom, and guests are treated to a scrumptious, proper southern breakfast each morning. It is our hope that guests find southern hospitality and charm within the walls of this true southern treasure, as well as on Linden’s famed porches.

The History of Linden Historic Bed & Breakfast
The story of Linden Historic Bed & Breakfast is steeped in over two centuries of history, with each chapter adding a unique touch to its timeless charm. Originally built in 1785 by Alexander Moore, the mansion was known as “Oaklands” and featured a central two-story, four-room structure. Ownership later passed to Moore’s son, James Moore, before it became the property of United States Senator and former Attorney General of Mississippi, Thomas Buck Reed, in 1818.
Renaming the estate “Reedland,” Senator Reed left his mark by adding the elegant frontispiece to the doorway and constructing the existing East Wing, enhancing the home’s grandeur. Tragically, Senator Reed passed away in 1829 while traveling to assume his seat in Washington, D.C., but not before selling the estate to Dr. John Ker.
Dr. Ker, whose family had moved to Natchez after President Thomas Jefferson appointed his father to the Supreme Court of Mississippi, was a prominent physician and planter in the region. After acquiring the property, he renamed it “Linden” and further enhanced its beauty and functionality by adding the living room and the front gallery. These additions completed the transformation of Linden into the stately mansion we admire today.
In 1849, Linden entered the next chapter of its story when it was purchased by Jane Gustine Conner following the death of her husband. A mother of ten children and three grandchildren, Jane made her own lasting contribution by planting seven Cedars of Lebanon in front of Linden, which continue to stand as silent witnesses to the property’s storied past.
Today, Linden remains in the loving care of the Conner family, with the current owner representing the sixth generation. This legacy of stewardship ensures that Linden’s rich history and Southern charm are preserved for future generations to experience and enjoy.

SEO Title: Accessibility Statement
SEO Description: This is the Accessibility Statement.
Canonical: https://www.lindenbandb.com/accessibility-statement

**Content:**
Linden Historic Bed & Breakfast’s original house was built in 1790 with additions as late as 1849 and is designated as historic under local law. Due to the historic nature of the property, fully renovating and completing all accessibility requirements would significantly impact and potentially destroy the historical significance of the building and grounds. As a result, we regret that Linden Historic Bed and Breakfast does not offer fully accessible guest rooms, and is, in fact, listed on the National Register of Historic Places under the National Historic Preservation Act (16 U.S.C. 470 et seq.) or is designated as historic under State or local law (§ 36.405 Alterations: Historic preservation.), which offers guidelines for preserving cultural and historic resources in the US.
Notwithstanding these limitations, we are committed to making improvements to the property where reasonable to enhance accessibility. We have minor alterations to enhance accessibility for some guests on our ground-floor rooms where possible. For more information and/or to see if these rooms and features meet your specific needs, please contact us directly via phone or email. Also please see our notes below for enhancements we have made to help make Linden somewhat accessible when possible.
Parking information – Our parking lot is spacious, well-maintained, but unpaved. The lot is level and we can arrange to have any spot reserved for ease of access to the building. Please contact us for more details.
Shower and tub grab bars have been added in each room.
A new handrailing was installed near our two step entrance at the rear of the home.
Parking can be requested by this easy entrance.
Feltus Room has low-clearance shower stall.
